Some firsts.

Category : Postcrossing, Received

I’ve finally got my incoming cards sorted into folders, with the countries alphabetically. It took forever, and I’m way behind in getting the newest ones filed, but it’s a much better system than having 90 albums all over the place. So today I’m sharing with you three cards that have caused me to create new country sections.

From India, this card shows the powders that are thrown during festivals. You buy the colours you want then toss them around, which sounds like 19  kinds of fun.

Tuvalu is an incredibly rare country to get a Postcrossing card from (brag brag).  Considering Postcrossing has just over 199,000 members as of today and only 8 of those members are in Tuvalu, you can see why. This is TV-96, and sent from the account of The Earth Day Tuvalu team – you can read more about it here on the Postcrossing blog.

Finally, from my long time friend Scott comes this card from Rwanda. Scott has been working in Africa for a few months and was kind enough to hunt up a postcard – Thanks Scott!

Did you?

HI. I’m just wondering here, did YOU get a postcard from Angela? No? Aww. Sucks to be you*.

The Resting Place

BOOYAH. How awesome is this photo? Almost as awesome as the lady who sent it to me. I want to sit there and watch the world roll by (i enjoy sitting, I’m really rather good at it). The pic is by Stephanie Izzo, and you can read Angies thoughts about her right here.

Another recent arrival which I LOVE came via Swap-Bot for the “I want to get rid of this card!” swap.

Rec'd: I want to get rid of this card

The note on the back says “Nose flute, yuck!” which is why my parter (Young46356) wanted to be rid of the card. Me? I think it’s awesome. It’s a great and expressive shot.

For the “If you ‘Building’ it, they will come” postcard swap, Mejulia sent me this LA Restaurant:

Rec'd: If you "Building" it P/C Swap

Whoa. It’s like the 80s mated with the Jetsons. I don’t know if I love the building or hate it. I am undecided.

Again, more Swap-Bot – this one for the Random Postcard swap.

Rec'd: Random Postcard

This adcard for Powell’s is delicious, it’s a book city! Who doesn’t want to live in a book city! I love the art style, and the travel wear actually really suits it. Okay maybe I’m the only one who likes travel wear.

Outgoing for Postcrossing, this card went off on its merry way to Finland today for someone who wanted “Samples of nature – landscapes, trees, animals etc”. I thought I’d share this sample from the Red Centre.

AU-81377

Yup, that’s why we call it the Red Centre. This range of cards has some gorgeous photos, but the picture quality is very pixelated, which is a shame.

*Shut up Matt.

When you think about your friends, it’s easy to remember the easy times, the fun times. Thinking of the late nights watching horror movies and talking until the sun came up, or spending all day playing cards and watching the same 6 episodes of Transformers over and over again. However, you friends, your true friends are there for the good and the bad.

When I think of my friends, I think of long nights at the hospital with my mom. I think of sobbing in bed at night and the only people that could help me feel normal again being thousands of miles away. When I think of my friends, I think of how much love they have give to me… and how much I don’t deserve it.

I’m not the nicest person, or the most generous, and definitely not the most eco-friendly… but these people love me no matter what. When I am sad, they cheer me up. When I am angry, they calm me down. And when I try and leave the house without pants on, they stop me. Well, they would if we all lived in the same house, anyway.

This past week and a half has been a roller coaster of emotions. My husband’s car is a total waste of machinery, so we had to buy a new one. Goodbye, money. The summer semester started, and the work load is almost too much. My best friend gave birth to one of the most beautiful babies I have ever seen… and all I want to do is pick up the phone and gush to my mom how gorgeous he is. But I can’t, and it makes me sad.

My friends know this, and somewhere deep down I know that Matt knew this, too. He might have sent these 2 post cards quite some time ago, but they came at just the right time. Opening my mailbox to find a super adorable polar bear one day, then the BEST pun of all time (the back says “let’s cuddlefish!”) the next brought a smile to my face that hasn’t been there for awhile.

And that’s what friends are for. To further your addictions, and make you smile when nothing else can.

Of Cookie and Nevers

Category : Postcrossing, Random Cards, Received, Sent

Okay, so. Last year when I visited the Brookfield Zoo with my boy I got into a debate about Cookie the “Cockatoo”, declaring it to be NOT a Cockatoo, but a Major Mitchell. I was right, but so was he (It’s also known as Leadbeater’s Cockatoo), so all that punching me and trying to push me into the tiger exhibit was a bit harsh. I got a card from that same boy today:

Cookie

Matt has already told me he doesn’t “get” this postcard thing, but considering he spends like a BAJILLION dollars on comics every WEEK I think I’m allowed to have an obsession of my own. Also, he’s happy enough to enable my addiction, so you know. Keeper.

As for a card from a person I don’t know quite so well, we have this’un:

FR-93492

The scan really doesn’t do this justice, it’s the most wonderful glowing rich stone. Delicious. The card is from France.

Two outgoings today, one of my Postcrossing cards expired (boo) so I got to send another, and one arrived (huzzah!) so there’s one more. I’m creeping towards 5 million kilometers sent distance!

AU-80068

This one is off to Tanya in Russia who likes trains. I didn’t go on the train, but I DID go on the skyrail, which was both terrifying and wonderful.

AU-80117

This one is off to Alexandra in France who just said she liked to see other places. From left to right it’s the Shrine of Remembrance (with the Eternal Flame), a shot of the skyline with the Tennis Center in the foreground, and the Arts Center Spire.

So that’s all from me today. Do you guys remember when Angela used to post here? Man those were some fun times. If you feel like leaving a comment to guilt her into posting more, feel free. Extra points for sad puppy eyes.

Trinidad and Tobago

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent

Today’s incoming Postcrossing card is from a new country for my collection – Trinidad and Tobago.

TT-314

Trinidad and Tobago is considered a bit of a rare country on Postcrossing to get a card from, simply because the number of users who live there is so small. This is TT-314 which means it’s the 314th card send from there. To compare, the card I sent out today is AU-77958 and it looks like this:

AU-77958

It’s one of the ones I picked up on my Trip last year which was over a year ago now and I’m still stocked up with postcards. How could that happen? Let’s just say when it comes to postcards, I shop hard.

Postcard Haul

Mmhmm. I was only away for around three weeks too…

Finally today, the card for Julie I mentioned last week has arrived in her hot little hands, so now I can show you the delicious pandaness.

Panda

Isn’t he (or she) adorable? The card is from a book of postcards I bought at the Brookfield Zoo last year in Chicago, and they’re all so glossy and delicious.

Angela will be back from the Big Giant Apple soon, for those missing her terribly (me! me!).

Barenaked Ladies

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent, Swap-Bot

Thought that would get your attention! No, no naked ladies here, but today I sent out a postcard featuring them for the Musician Postcard Swap.

Sent: Musician Postcard

Also heading out today, a SEEKRIT card for Julie which I won’t post here yet because she might see it with her eyeballs (she’s always looking at things), and this for a Wishlist RAK dealio:

RAK: Postcard

That’s one of my Zazzle cards for someone who wanted postcards with wild flowers on them. Nothing wilder than a Golden Wattle! They stay up all night and don’t care WHO they offend. Seriously.

Incoming today from Postcrossing is this sweet watercolour painting card from Portugal.

PT-119595

This one comes from Maria, a 22 month old with a 10 word vocab and amazingly neat handwriting. ;) I like it because it looks like a Melbourne tram from before they decided the trams needed to be prettied up. I think it was Portugal the crew from the movie “Malcolm” ended up at in the film finale. The more you know!

Big Mail Day

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent

Not so much incoming mail today, but a LOT of outgoing with 5 swaps going postal, a postcrossing card and an empty envelope to Angela. I got one of the Quartered cards, but I’ll save that for a full up post of all 4 later.

I did get this card from Postcrossing:

FI-793234
From Finland! I have such the collection of froggy cards now, it’s pretty awesome.

Not a postcard, but a greeting card for Fred, who is turning 100 in May. Mindy on the Swap Bot forums asked for cards to be sent, and who am I to refuse? So I picked out this one:

It’s a photograph by a local photographer and it’s so adorable I could fall off my chair in a pile of goo right now. Visit her site, she’s pretty amazing. No the watermark isn’t on the actual card, I’m just trying to make sure she gets her due credit :)
