A few of my sent from the past couple of days, all for Postcrossing.

AU-84986

Heading off to Finland for someone who wants sunset postcards is this view of the Melbourne skyline. It’s my own photo, and I’m quietly proud of it.

AU-84985

Someone in Germany likes city views, so this night shot of Melbourne will hopefully please them. To be 100% honest I have literally NO idea where these lights are, I assume Southbank, but I might be wrong.

AU-85004

A Beatles fan in New Zealand lamented that Beatles cards were hard to find. I decided to cheer her up with this reproduction of the first Beatles publicity postcard. Because I’m lovely.

AU-84812

An art student in Malta asked for art cards or “anything spiffy looking”. I hope she enjoys Rex Ray!

AU-84530

A postcrosser from Singapore enjoys cityviews to study the buildings, so I picked the card with the most amount of city in it!

AU-84616

This is heading to Canada, for a user without any preferences for cards, but who enjoys travel. I thought she might like some train waiting rooms from Budapest, because who wouldn’t?

AU-84271

And finally, this Red Tailed Black Cockatoo is off to the USA for a wild life lover.

Now that I have 15 travelling cards on Postcrossing, I sure am giving the stash a kicking! What have YOU sent recently?

Oh hullo

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent

I’ve been lazy, I do so apologise. Where am I at? Well, I’m about 7 cards off having my Postcrossing sending limit increased (WHOOT) and I’ve had some gems incoming over the past couple of days.

TH-42636

From Thailand this card shows the Royal Barge Ceremony, an event that’s been happening for more than 700 years!

BR-103460

From Brazil. Now, this one got wet in transit, but I like when things happen to cards as they travel (I don’t know why). Check out the buildings! Are they not gorgeous? I shall tell you, they are.

I’ve sent a fair few over the past little while, so I won’t post them all, but I wanted to show you this one:

AU-80863

It’s from the Elliot Erwitt set I reviewed earlier and is off to Belarus for a couple who want romantic cards. Did I do good or did I do good? (I did good).

If you’d like to see the others I sent and received you can poke your face at my Flickr set.

Review: Andy and Elliott

Category : Review

I like to buy postcard books and packs, simply because they tend to be pretty good value, and they add a nice variety to my stash. So I figured, why not talk about those? So I am. Let’s start with Andy.

andyreview

Title: Andy Warhol: Men.
Price: US$9.99
ISBN: 978-0-8118-4377-5
What you get: 30 standard sized postcards, no image repeats, with a matt finish in a cardboard sleeve.
It has to be said, I’m not really much of a Warhol fan. I tend to think his “best” and most applauded works are a bit over-rated. Having said that, the art works in this pack are pretty interesting, and I hadn’t seen most of them before. As the title suggests, all 30 cards are of men – either drawn, painted or photographed. Out of the 30, 9 include explicit nudity and three are borderline. So for postcrossing, perhaps not the best pack to get as there’s not often an excuse to send a penis to someone.

My favourite cards in this set are the drag queen ones, I think they’re really well photographed. The drawings I could take or leave, but again that’s probably just because I don’t adore Warhol like I probably should.

Overall: Considering that one third are “unsendable” (though of course it depends on what you personally want postcards for, you saucy minx), I would skip this pack. I wouldn’t have bought it if I’d known better what was inside, not because I’m a prude but because of the ones that will sit in my stash for ever.

Title: 50 Postcards – Pictures by Elliott Erwitt
Price: $22.95 RR (got mine half price)

What You Get: 50 A5 sized postcards, 25 different black and white images with a low gloss finish in a flip lid box.

I love these photos very much indeed. From the bizarre to the cheeky, they each have a little shine of fun. The cards are huge, which might be a problem for who you send it to if they store in albums, but they’re gorgeous. Two of each photo means you can keep one and send one (which I’m doing for some of these) and they’re large enough to frame and display if you want to. Beautifully captured moments of life.
Overall: Buy this box. Especially if you’re tired of sending tourist postcards, or if you just enjoy photography. Sadly the image on the top of the box (the little boy on the back of the bike) isn’t actually in the cards but nevermind, these are gorgeous through out and make a unique addition to your stash. Go buy this box!

Artist Profile: Stephanie Izzo

While vacationing in New York City, I saw wondrous things! It really is a magical place, full of people and hopes and dreams. It’s also full of bums, trash and hipsters… but that’s not the point.

As my husband and I waited in the airport for our flight to board, we meandered through a few of the shops. In one of the book stores, the first thing that caught my eye was a big, gorgeous 6.5″ by 4″ post card of this photo:

Words cannot describe how I felt. It was simply, gorgeous. The card was big, the picture beautiful… I had to have it.

I also had to have one each of the other 20-ish cards. Upon my return home, I searched for the artist. Her name is Stephanie Izzo and she is amazing! Here are some of the other cards I brought home.

Her photography captures the real essence of the city. The colors, the richness, the glow. Honestly, there’s nowhere like it- and Stephanie knows that.

Fungus, Shoppin’

Category : Sent, Swap-Bot

Only one outgoing today (and no incoming *sniffle*), a swap bot card for “Random Postcard Swap #2″. My partner lists herself as a nature nut with a vast appreciation for all that nature is and provides, so I thought she might enjoy a fungus card.

Sent: Random Postcard Swap #2

It’s another one of my own photos which I Zazzle’d, originally taken on film if you can believe it. Yes, film!

I’ve been running a bit low on Melbourne and Victoria cards, so I stocked up somewhat today. These are Steve Parrish cards and available at about every newsagent in Victoria.

Restocked

They are nice clear brightly coloured and super glossy which people really enjoy. I like to keep a range of Melbourne views on hand, in various forms. Some people enjoy night views, dusk views or aerial views so it’s more fun for me to send them something they’ll really enjoy.

Barenaked Ladies

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent, Swap-Bot

Thought that would get your attention! No, no naked ladies here, but today I sent out a postcard featuring them for the Musician Postcard Swap.

Sent: Musician Postcard

Also heading out today, a SEEKRIT card for Julie which I won’t post here yet because she might see it with her eyeballs (she’s always looking at things), and this for a Wishlist RAK dealio:

RAK: Postcard

That’s one of my Zazzle cards for someone who wanted postcards with wild flowers on them. Nothing wilder than a Golden Wattle! They stay up all night and don’t care WHO they offend. Seriously.

Incoming today from Postcrossing is this sweet watercolour painting card from Portugal.

PT-119595

This one comes from Maria, a 22 month old with a 10 word vocab and amazingly neat handwriting. ;) I like it because it looks like a Melbourne tram from before they decided the trams needed to be prettied up. I think it was Portugal the crew from the movie “Malcolm” ended up at in the film finale. The more you know!

Yaakov, Wackov and Dot

Category : Postcrossing, Sent

Since I’m new to this whole Postcrossing thing my send limit is a paltry 5 postcards at a time. Luckily, one of my cards was RECEIVED in Belarus today and I was able to send out a new one!

Yaakov, a married businessman from Israel with 3 children will be receiving this card! It is a card I had made from one of my own photos. As I said on the back, there’s just something so refreshing about Spring. Insert your metaphor for new beginnings and rebirth here.

Sent – Black and White Photography

Category : Sent, Swap-Bot

For today’s ‘Out’ pile I had 2 very simple post cards.

The swap is titled “Black and White Photography” and all I had to do was affix a black and white photo that I took and send it to 2 partners. Photography AND swapping? Oh you bet I joined.

Now, my photog skills are about as big as my big toe, so I didn’t have a lot of photos to choose from. I ended up going with a photo I took of 2 of my good friends in the park.

There they are, in all their glory. Jenn is an English major at Univeristy of North Florida and Kyle works in real estate with his mom in Gainesville. They each travel an hour and a half every weekend to see each other, and they are just adorable. Not to mention patient because I was taking their photos for about 2 hours.

Needless to say, the photo made very cute post cards and I mailed one each to Angeleyes and Liveyourheart. I’ve crossed my fingers they arrive safe as they’re going to Germany and Australia, respectively.

Big Mail Day

Category : Postcrossing, Received, Sent

Not so much incoming mail today, but a LOT of outgoing with 5 swaps going postal, a postcrossing card and an empty envelope to Angela. I got one of the Quartered cards, but I’ll save that for a full up post of all 4 later.

I did get this card from Postcrossing:

FI-793234
From Finland! I have such the collection of froggy cards now, it’s pretty awesome.

Not a postcard, but a greeting card for Fred, who is turning 100 in May. Mindy on the Swap Bot forums asked for cards to be sent, and who am I to refuse? So I picked out this one:

It’s a photograph by a local photographer and it’s so adorable I could fall off my chair in a pile of goo right now. Visit her site, she’s pretty amazing. No the watermark isn’t on the actual card, I’m just trying to make sure she gets her due credit :)

Just Because #5

Category : Sent, Swap-Bot

Just Because is a wonderful reason to do anything. It’s my reason for painting the dog’s nails (Ruby Red- you nosy devil), it’s my reason for this blog, and it’s the reason for this Swap! Having to send a post card to 3 separate partners left me with some tough decisions to make- like which cards to part with.

Like grapes, but less tasty.

Here we have a lovely card sent to the lovely Arabella! Funny thing about her- she was my partner in my first ever swap “Quartered 2.0″ (hosted by my lovely co-blogger)! Imagine my surprise when I checked out who I’d be sending to! Considering there are 90 people in this particular swap, I think it’s pretty awesome. As for the card, I love it but that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that may or mat not* have taken this photo myself.

Damn tourists! Get off my beach!

This card is thanks to my adoring husband who drives 1.5 hours (92 miles) to work each day, and after a 9 hours shift comes home. He works in Daytona Beach, and after immense begging (2 minutes) he agreed to bring me home a stack of Daytona cards. Miss loolie said she liked scenic cards, and therefor I send her this wide shot of the beach.

Outhouse bench set to stun!

This little gem I found in an antique store downtown. No date on the back of the card, but I would love to know when this was made. Even though it’s got hideous colors and a corny (HAHA) punchline, I just love it. Here’s hoping SusanLS loves it just much! Nothing like a good dose of kitsch to start your week off right.

That’s it for today’s mail run. Cross your fingers I get the short line at the post office!
